Creative collaboration is at the heart of Florestan's mission. We relish the opportunity to work with artists, musicians and composers of all backgrounds and levels of experience, with the aim of fostering new growth in the performance of song repertoire.
Florestan explores the breadth and depth of song repertoire, ranging from lieder and mélodies to cutting edge contemporary works. Programs are individualized according to the needs of each collaborating institution. Florestan Recital Project offers a wide range of artistic residency programming, all geared toward fostering song collaborations among students in performance, composition and repertoire study. These activities are designed for college/university music departments as an enriching supplement to school curricula.
Past residencies have ranged from short-term visits to a three-year extended stay. Residency programs have included producing a multi-event performance season; developing conversation between artists, composers, and poets and students; and various community outreach activities. In culmination of an extended residency at Dickinson College, Florestan hosted The American Vanguard Festival, celebrating the landscape of American song and featuring world premieres by composers Libby Larsen and Jake Heggie, among others.

The Leader
The Florestan Recital thrived perhaps not by the success of the performances themselves but by the manner in which they were displayed to the audience. In an industry full of recitals and concerts that require audience members to simply sit back and enjoy the show on stage, the Florestan Project invites and even encourages spectators to become actively involved in the performance. The recital proved that innovation is not created through the medium itself but rather through those artists willing to demonstrate ingenuity.
