Shiela Kibbe, piano
Shiela Kibbe is chairman of the Collaborative Piano Department at Boston University’s School of Music. Hailed by Richard Dyer in the Boston Globe as a “superb collaborative pianist,” Ms. Kibbe has enjoyed an international career as recital partner to instrumentalists and vocalists alike, appearing throughout the United States, Europe, Japan, and Russia.
In 1999 baritone Stephen Salters won the Naumburg Prize with Shiela Kibbe at the piano, and they may be heard together on the Cyprés label of Qualiton Records. Other recordings featuring her at the piano include a Koch presentation of the John Oliver Chorale, a forthcoming Albany Records release entitled “Sonatinas and Other Ideas” with trumpeter Terry Everson, and a disc of 20th-century Greek Art Songs with mezzo-soprano Penelope Bitzas.
For several years Ms. Kibbe was rehearsal pianist for the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s Tanglewood Festival Chorus, working with conductor John Oliver, and symphony conductors Seiji Ozawa, Simon Rattle, Roger Norrington, and John Williams. She has been principal keyboardist and vocal coach for the Symphony and Opera Association in Chattanooga, TN; pianist for the Pennsylvania Opera Theatre and the Philadelphia Woodwind Quintet Seminars in Philadelphia, PA; and collaborative pianist for the International Suzuki Institute in Ithaca, NY.
Shiela Kibbe holds two Master of Music degrees from Temple University in Philadelphia, and was twice a fellow in vocal accompanying at the Tanglewood Music Center. She has taught at the New England Conservatory, and began her association with Boston University as a vocal coach in the Opera Institute under Phyllis Curtin.
